On Monday, March 11th, the jury in a Los Angeles court delivered a mixed verdict for former Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein. The jury found him guilty of raping one woman but either found him not guilty or could not decide on other charges. In light of these findings, RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) released the following statement.
RAINN Statement on Harvey Weinstein’s Verdict
“The verdict in the Harvey Weinstein case shows that survivors can make their voices heard and justice can be done. We hope this will offer some measure of relief to all those who have experienced sexual violence and send a powerful message about the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. While criminal cases are a critical part of creating an environment where survivors feel empowered to speak out and seek justice, it is important to remember that most sexual assaults do not result in criminal trials or convictions. That’s why RAINN works every day to ensure survivors have access to free and confidential services that provide emotional and practical support,” said Scott Berkowitz, President & Founder of RAINN.
RAINN believes that all survivors deserve access to free and confidential services without needing to go through a criminal trial or endure additional trauma. That is why they run the National Sexual Assault Hotline, which provides 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors offering emotional support and crucial information about how to find help in your local community. In 2019 alone, nearly 300,000 people contacted our hotline for help.
