Raffaele Riva career in engineering and his studies at the Politecnico di Milano University in Italy have made him a well-rounded player in the global semiconductor industry.
Since 2011, Raffaele Riva has been working as an Applications Principal Engineer at STMicroelectronics, where he focuses on subsystems design for mobile phones and tablets.
I am very excited to see what the future brings because every day I find something new to learn or invent.
Today, there is an enormous demand for smartphones and tablets that are able to provide the users with enhanced multimedia capabilities, including interfaces to cloud services and other devices.
The primary goal of Riva’s work at STMicroelectronics is to make sure that each device can be connected easily with other devices and systems.
The task is complex because device makers need to balance on-device connectivity with the needs of external systems where the data will be stored.
The functionality offered by the device must be integrated with the implementation of wireless standards, such as 3G, 4G and 5G.
Riva’s role is to ensure that all the parts of the wireless communication system can operate together.
Raffaele Riva’s main field of expertise is in radio frequency (RF), but he also has knowledge about power management and analog/mixed-signal design.
Raffaele Riva education background is in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano University.
His first job experience was as a software developer in the Silicon Lab, a Silicon Valley startup company.
In 1999, he moved to Texas Instruments (TI) in San Jose, CA as an RF/Systems Engineer. Riva worked on CMOS digital signal processing (DSP), analog-to-digital conversion and wireless communications systems.
In 2003, Riva left TI to join the IT department of STMicroelectronics (an SEPP “Silicon Valley Electronics Partner”) as a RF/Systems Engineer.
In 2012, he was promoted to become an Applications Principal Engineer.
He is an active member of IEEE-SAE and the EMC Society. In 2009, he received the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society James H. Cox Foundation Award for Distinguished Engineering Graduate.
In 2017, he was awarded the IEEE Microelectronics Technology Society Technical Leadership Award.
In 2017, he also received two IEEE Circuits and Systems Society awards: The David R. Morgan Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement and The Dan S. Lockwood Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement in a career of more than ten years in the area of RF/Systems Design. Go to this page for more information.
