Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is a nonprofit advocacy organization that seeks to preserve religious liberty, the sanctity of human life, and the family. It was founded in 1994 by 30 Christian leaders and has since grown into a powerful legal group with supporters from 40 countries. The organization defends people of all beliefs through litigation, education and public policy work. ADF has won six Supreme Court cases in seven years.
ADF engages in legal defense alongside several organizations across the world. This organization is recognized globally by the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the Organization of American States, and the European Parliament. ADF also engages with large organizations such as the European Union’s Fundamental Rights Agency and the European Organization for Security and Co-operation.
The alliance’s headquarters are located in Scottsdale, Arizona and they have regional offices across the United States as well as outside of America. They litigate cases across America on issues such as abortion, marriage, parental rights, school choice and more. Several current cases the group is involved in include:
Marriage Cases
Same-sex marriage is one of the Alliance Defending Freedom’s few areas of focus, but they have also been involved in cases of same-sex couples who are unable to visit loved ones who are incarcerated or put into nursing homes. These cases are important as they allow people facing discrimination or being denied rights to live their lives without prejudice.
Parental Rights
Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) defends parents in cases where their children have been taken away by the state for failing to vaccinate them or for other reasons that may infringe on parental rights.
The First Amendment
Many of ADF’s cases have to do with protecting people’s right to free speech or expression and the ability for counselors, students and others to speak freely without being punished for their statements. In 2013 an ADF attorney defended a Christian student leader from Vanderbilt University when he was told that he could not express his religious beliefs in an optional presentation. Because of their efforts, the university allowed him to share his views.
